Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary nominee Opiyo Wandayi has explained why he is the best candidate for the position.

Speaking when he appeared before the Committee on Appointments in Parliament, Wandayi said he has been a member of the Public Investment Committee, Energy and Commercial.

This, he said, adds to his competencies to handle the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum.

"Apart from being the leader of the minority, I have also been a member of the Public Investment Committee, Energy and Commercial," he said.

He exuded confidence that he has the necessary competencies that are required to handle the docket, given his academic, professional and Parliamentary background.

Asked by Deputy Speaker Gladys Boss about his shift in ideology, Wandayi said he was playing his Parliamentary role as the Minority Leader.

Gladys Boss said she has noted that on many occasions he opposed government proposals.

"What shift in ideology will allow you to satisfactorily serve as a Cabinet Secretary in government?" she asked.

"Parliament has a collective duty to oversight the Executive. I was simply playing my role as an MP but above all, as leader of the Minority. I was leading my troops in putting the Executive to check without any prejudice," he said.

Wandayi said there is no contradiction whatsoever in what he believed in then, and what he believes in now.

"I simply believe that I have been called to perform a national duty and as a patriotic Kenyan I have responded positively to the call," the former Minority Leader said.
