Cabinet Secretary nominee for Mining Hassan Joho has said that getting rid of cartels will be his first order of business if approved.

According to Joho, after his nomination by President William Ruto, he has realised that there is a 'greater cartel' in the industry.

He insisted that it is now time the mining industry stop being a speculation market.

"There are greater cartels in the mining industry; if you approve me, that is where I begin.

"The mining industry in Kenya cannot be a market of speculators," Joho said.

He spoke when he appeared before the National Assembly Committee on Appointments.

He mentioned instances where companies take over 40 years of mapping for minerals.

He said that should not be the case at all, adding that it should take a shorter period.
