Top police commanders converge in Nairobi for their last day of meetings to discuss security issues.
It will be the first time for the commanders drawn from the Kenya Police, Administration Police Service and Directorate of Criminal Investigations to meet the acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli.
Masengeli summoned the meeting to the National Police Campus in Embakasi on Tuesday, August 6 for among other reasons familiarization purposes.
Masengeli is also the Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police Service.
The meeting involves Regional Police Commanders from all the services.
Masengeli, his Deputy Inspector General of Kenya Police counterpart Eliud Lagat and DCI Mohamed Amin met the Regional police bosses on Monday for a review of their performance so far ahead of the Embakasi meeting.
The Commissioner General of Kenya Prisons Patrick Aranduh also held a similar meeting with his commanders on Monday.
The meetings, according to insiders were meant to review how they have performed in the past two months which they saw as the most difficult season.
This followed anti-government protests that were staged countrywide.
Another planned protest on August 8 was also discussed in the meetings by the respective commanders.
This will be a test for the police commanders amid condemnation of how the service handled the past protests.
More than 60 people were killed in the incidents while dozens of others are missing amid claims of abduction by state agents.
The meeting at Embakasi will also discuss proposed reforms in the National Police, prisons and National Youth Service amid financial constraints.
There are more than 170 proposed reforms, which need a staggering Sh108 billion to implement, officials say.
The process of naming the new IG is ongoing. The new IG will succeed Japhet Koome who resigned on July 12.
Ruto nominated Douglas Kanja as the IG nominee.
The new police bosses come to office when the country is facing many challenges in general including joblessness and rising crime.
The role of DIG-KPS involves commanding, controlling, and administering the Kenya Police Service under the direction of the IG.
The DIG-APS is responsible for leading the Administration Police Service and operates under the directions and control of the IG.
The new CP for prisons is an insider and also comes to office when there are many challenges in the service.
The prison personnel are complaining they were left out of the recent salary increments in the police despite promises made.
But Aranduh told the meeting on Monday the money will be paid this month.
