President William Ruto now says that the fees on the letters issued by universities to students were misleading.

Speaking in Ogembo, Kisii county on Wednesday, Ruto said that the amounts on the letters were what it could cost one to complete the entire course in University.

The President said that the government will instruct the universities to withdraw those letters and issue proper ones to parents.

He said this directive will be issued no later than today.

"The letters issued by our universities were misleading because they were talking about the cost of courses. We want those letters that were released earlier to be withdrawn and proper letters issued as to the amount of money a parent is supposed to pay and not the cost of the course," Ruto said.

"I want to tell all parents that the letters you received from universities indicating the cost of the course your child was going to attend, those letters are misleading."

The President is on the last day of his three-day development tour of Kisii and Nyamira counties.

Ruto insisted that the government has changed the delivery model of giving funds to universities.

He said this has seen the amount set aside for higher education doubled from the initial Sh45 billion.

"I want to announce from Kisii that we have changed the delivery model because we have increased the money available for funding for our higher education. We have increased the money from Sh45 billion to Sh82 billion," the President said.

"We are going to instruct the universities to issue new letters from today that will indicate how much a parent is supposed to pay and not the cost of the course."

Ruto assured parents that he would make sure all Kenyan children have access to higher education.

"I want to assure parents that we will make sure no child in Kenya remains out of higher education because of the ability of their parent," he added.

In July, Higher Education and Research PS Beatrice Inyangala nullified fees for first-year students placed in universities by KUCCPS.

Inyangala said the new structure will be issued from August 19.

"The Ministry of Education wishes to inform the public, particularly parents and guardians of students that the fees to be paid by students and their families as relates to the full cost of each degree programme as previously communicated in the admission letters is hereby nullified and does not apply anymore," she said.

Some 153,292 students are set to join university.
