The Senate is expected to hold a special sitting today to hear the impeachment charges against Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza.

Announcing the sitting on Tuesday, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi said he had received a letter from the Speaker of the County Assembly of Meru dated August 9, 2024.

In the letter, the Speaker of the County Assembly of Meru informed the Speaker of the Senate of the approval of a Motion for the removal from office by impeachment of Mwangaza.

"I have appointed Wednesday, August 14, 2024, as a day for a special sitting of the Senate. The sitting shall be held in the Senate Chamber, Main Parliament Buildings, Nairobi, commencing at 2.30 pm," Kingi said.

"The business to be transacted at the sitting shall be the hearing of the charges against Kawira Mwangaza, the Governor of Meru County."

Hearing of Shakahola manslaughter case to continue

The hearing of the manslaughter case against cult preacher Paul Mackenzie and his co-accused persons will today enter its third day.

The hearing began on Monday, August 12.

The Mombasa magistrate's court will today hear the testimony of the fourth witness who is expected to take to the stand.

On Tuesday, the second and the third witnesses who are among Mackenzie's followers narrated group of followers narrated to court how the first group arrived at Shakahola in October 2020.

They were transported in a lorry.

The witness said Mackenzie had informed his followers in September that year that a piece of land had been secured at Chakama Ranch.

Lobbies to address media on Sudanese war

Sudan’s warring factions will meet in Geneva on Wednesday for peace talks.

A press conference in Nairobi will demand an immediate ceasefire to save lives at Baraza Media Lab, Keystone Park, Riverside Drive, Nairobi.

The Sudanese war has raged since April 2023 between the Sudanese army under the country's de facto ruler Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.

According to the International Rescue Committee, over 15,500 people have been killed as a result of the war.

Over 10 million people have also been displaced in Sudan.
