Thousands of residents of Eldoret have turned up at the Eldoret Sports Club where President William Ruto is expected to preside over the elevation of the town to a city status.
More people are lining up for security checks before accessing the sports club where Ruto will hand over the city charter to the Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii.
Each of the residents entering the sports club is being treated to a loaf of bread and soda as part of celebrations to welcome the new city.
Ruto hosted a breakfast for Kenya’s Olympics team at the Eldoret State Lodge before heading to the county headquarters to start a series of activities ahead of the handover of the charter.
Ruto is with his deputy Rigathi Gachagia, a host of Cabinet Secretaries and elected leaders from the region and other parts of the country.
“All is going on well and we are so happy to welcome Kenya’s fifth city,” Bii said.
