Man remanded for absconding trial over Sh2.3m alleged fraud

A man has been remanded at the Industrial Area Prison pending his trial, for reportedly absconding court for his pre-trial.

Jitedra Amritlal Pattni allegedly failed to appear in court after taking a plea, resulting in the issuance of an arrest warrant.

It has taken seven months for the warrant to be fulfilled.

Pattni was charged with obtaining money by false pretence with allegations that he committed a crime on diverse dates between January 17, 2023, and February 20, 2023, at Parklands.

According to the charge sheet presented by the prosecution, Pattn, with the intent to fraudulently obtain cash amounting to Sh2,375,000 from Shaitsa Khamisa Abdul Latif, falsely pretending he could supply her with precious items.

The items included two Tazanite diamond rings, a Tazanite bungle on 18kt yellow gold, Tazanite earrings on gold and two warrigs 8.2cts each.

Pattni was also charged with issuing a bad cheque on March 3, 2023, at Parklands where he allegedly issued a cheque of Sh475,000 in favour of Latif, knowing well that the account had insufficient funds.

On count three, he is charged with issuing a bad cheque of Sh95,000 in favour of Latif.

When he appeared before the court on Tuesday, the Court heard that the medical report that the accused had purported to produce had been verified to be fake and not from Kenyatta National Hospital.

The prosecution applied to have bond and bail issued in favour of Pattni cancelled and he is remanded in prison pending trial.

The court will deliver its ruling on August 22, 2024, as to whether bail and bond will be cancelled.
