The Senate will convene a special meeting on Monday to hear impeachment charges against embattled Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza.

This is according to a Gazette Notice by Speaker of the Senate Amason Kingi.

"Special sittings of the Senate to hear the charges against Hon Kawira Mwangaza, Governor of Meru County, seeking her removal from office through impeachment, will be held on Monday, August 19, 2024 and Tuesday, August 20, 2024 in the Senate Chamber by way of Plenary," he said.

Kingi said the sittings shall be held in the Senate Chamber from Monday at 9 am and on Tuesday from 9 am until the conclusion of the business of the day.

He said the business to be transacted at the sittings shall be consideration of the Joint Report of the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security and the Senate Standing Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations.

This will be on the approval hearing for Douglas Kanja Kirocho, the nominee for appointment to the position of Inspector-General of the National Police Service.

The House will also consider a motion on the alteration of the Senate Calendar for the third session.

Lastly, it will carry out the investigation of the proposed removal from office by impeachment of Mwangaza.

"In accordance with standing order 33 (5) of the Senate Standing Orders, the business specified in this Notice shall be the only business before the Senate during the Special Sittings, following which the Senate shall stand adjourned until Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at 2.30pm in accordance with the Senate calendar," Kingi said.

The decision comes after the Senate on Wednesday convened a meeting to hear charges against Mwangaza.

The Senate resolved to investigate the proposed removal from office by impeachment of Mwangaza on the request of the Senate Majority Loader and with the support of the requisite number of Senators.

Mwangaza was on Thursday, August 8,  impeached for the third time in two years after MCAs voted in favour of the ouster motion.

The embattled Governor was hounded out of the office after 49 MCAs voted in support of the motion against 17 who rejected it.

Three members failed to avail themselves at the assembly for the impeachment vote.

Nominated MCA Zipporah Kinya accused Mwangaza of three counts:  gross violations of the constitution, gross misconduct and abuse of office.

In the gross violation of the constitution and other laws, Kinya said Mwangaza illegally revoked the appointment of Virginia Kawira as the secretary.
