Council of Governors chairperson Anne Waiguru has lauded Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga's appointment as the ODM chairperson.

Waiguru said the appointment was a testament to the growing influence of women in the political landscape.

“Governor Wanga's achievement adds to that of our Embu counterpart Cecil Mbarire who is the UDA's chairperson,” Waiguru said.

She spoke during the G7 Council of Governors Women Caucus meeting in Machakos on Friday.

Waiguru joined her colleagues in rallying Kenyans to support the election of more women in the 2027 polls to advance gender equality and foster inclusive governance.

The Governors said they are determined to ensure more women are elected as county bosses, MPs and MCAs during the 2027 elections.

“We will rally Kenyans to support the re-election of female governors who will be seeking their second term in office and election of additional ones to realize the G24 dream,” Waiguru said.

The Kirinyaga Governor said the council “takes immense pride” in the achievement because UDA and ODM are the two largest political parties in Kenya.

“This embodies the very essence and momentum of the G7 which strives to empower and elevate women to the highest leadership ranks. This is no small accomplishment,” Waiguru said.

In attendance are governors Wavinya Ndeti, Wanga, Mbarire, Fatuma Achani (Kwale) and Susan Kihika (Nakuru) all of who urged women considering vying for positions in the upcoming 2027 general elections to count on support from G7.

“I want you to know that we are here for you. I want to assure you that you have our full support. Through this strategy, we are committed to providing the guidance and assistance you need to succeed,” Waiguru noted.

The G7 strategy was officially launched in March at an event attended by President William Ruto.

It will be launched in all the devolved units headed by female governors.

The COG chairperson said the launch of the strategy in counties is meant to popularize and tailor its approach to local contexts together with discussing how to implement robust mentorship programs that will increase the number of women in leadership across the country.

“To achieve our ambitious goals, we must go beyond national efforts. We must engage with women at all levels, including the grassroots. That's why we have embarked on a journey to launch this strategy across all G7 Counties,” she said.

Waiguru asked male governors serving their last term in office to support their female deputies to take over after them or mentor women leaders to take up other positions.

The Governor asked women and other leaders to support efforts by G7 in advancing gender equality and fostering inclusive governance.

“Let us work together to build a future where women’s voices are not only heard but are integral to the decision-making processes that shape our nation,” Waiguru said.
