Senate begins today the hearing the impeachment of Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza.

She will be facing the plenary just like her second impeachment motion in which Senators absolved her of all the seven charges against her.

The speaker will read out the charges to the governor who will be required to plead to them (charges).

Kawira faces three broad charges; gross violation of the constitution, gross misconduct and abuse of office.

Soon after, the MCAs and governors will be accorded time to make their opening remarks.

The ward reps, through their lawyers, will then take the stand to lay bare their case against the county chief.

When the hearing started, Senate Clerk Jeremiah Nyegenye read the charges.

Mwangaza pleaded not guilty to all three charges levelled against her by the Meru County Assembly.

Speaking after the accusations were read to her ahead of hearing the impeachment case, Mwangaza insisted she is not guilty to charges.

"Not guilty," she said.

Kawira faces three broad charges; gross violation of the constitution, gross misconduct and abuse of office.

She is being represented by lawyers Elisha Ongoya and Elias Mutuma as lead as well as Bridah Kimathi, Robert Mutembei, Edgar Busienga and Collins Mwenda.

The assembly this time is banking on the services of Lawyer Ndegwa Njiru as the lead counsel.

Njiru will lead a legal team comprising Mwangi Ndegwa, Mwirigi Eric Muriuki, Mwereru Boniface Mawira, Antony Mwenda, Ngure Benson Kinyua, Baptista Muriuki Kanyaru and Linda Nkirote Kithinji.

The sponsor of the impeachment Zipporah Kinyua will appear in person accompanied by MCA Aurelio Murangiri Kiramana.

The advocates of the County Assembly will be the first to state their case against Mwangaza on the floor of the Senate.
