Meru County Governor Kawira Mwangaza has retained the services of her two lead advocates in the fresh battle with the county assembly expected to play out at the Senate from 9am this Monday.

This is the third time  Mwangaza is facing an impeachment hearing on the floor of the Senate.

Mwangaza's first impeachment went the committee way while the second was heard by a plenary.

Her fate now lies in the Senate plenary that will hear her case.

Lawyers Elisha Ongoya and Elias Mutuma who led opening and closing submissions for the governor and interrogation of witnesses from the county assembly, respectively, in the second impeachment will once again take to the floor of the Senate to argue the governor's case.

Mutuma will now feature in all three impeachment cases the governor has faced since taking power in 2022.

Bridah Kimathi, Robert Mutembei, Edgar Busienga and Collins Mwenda are others who are part of the Governor's legal team.

The County Assembly on the other hand has parted ways with lawyer Muthomi Thiankolu who was the lead counsel in the first and second impeachment.

Instead, the assembly this time is banking on the services of Lawyer Ndegwa Njiru as the lead counsel.

Njiru will lead a legal team comprising Mwangi Ndegwa, Mwirigi Eric Muriuki, Mwereru Boniface Mawira, Antony Mwenda, Ngure Benson Kinyua, Baptista Muriuki Kanyaru and Linda Nkirote Kithinji.

The sponsor of the impeachment Zipporah Kinyua will appear in person accompanied by MCA Aurelio Murangiri Kiramana.

The advocates of the County Assembly will be the first to state their case against Mwangaza on the floor of the Senate.

They will give an account of the charges levelled against the governor including gross violations of the constitution, gross misconduct and abuse of office.

The embattled Governor was hounded out of the office after 49 MCAs voted in support of the motion against 17 who rejected it.

Three members failed to avail themselves at the assembly for the impeachment vote.

On Tuesday, Mwangaza will present her evidence and witnesses, if any.

She will also face cross-examination between 10am and 2pm.

The hearing will be plenary meaning that all 67 senators will participate but only the 47 elected senators will vote.
