Defence CS Soipan Tuya on Tuesday met top leadership of the Kenya Defence Forces for an introductory session at the Defence Headquarters in Nairobi.

Tuya, the immediate former Environment CS, switched dockets with Aden Duale following the recent reconstitution of the Cabinet by President William Ruto following weeks of anti-government protests.

The CS noted the steadfastness of the KDF in playing their core mandate of protecting Kenya’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

This, she said, includes assisting and cooperating with other authorities in situations of emergency or disaster and restoring peace in instances of unrest or instability across the country as stipulated in the constitution.

“In support and enhancement of this critical role of our forces, we shall focus on enhanced capabilities and welfare, defence industry and defence diplomacy, among others,” Soipan said.

The top KDF leadership was led by Chief of the Defence Forces, (CDF), General Charles Kahariri during the introductory meeting.

Others present were Principal Secretary, the Department of Defence, Patrick Mariru, Vice Chief of the Defence Forces, Lt Gen J Omenda, Kenya Army, Kenya Airforce and Kenya Navy Commanders and various General Officers.

During her vetting before the National Assembly Committee on Appointments, Tuya pledged to consult widely once she assumes office considering she has no military background.

Tuya said though she has no military background, the Ministry of Defence has both a uniformed unit and a civilian unit.

“I have a lot of learning to do in terms of military operations, administration,” she said.

Tuya added that she is a team player by design and practice.

“I’m also very consultative in my leadership philosophy and these are skill sets that I will have to employ heavily in terms of the need to understand the operational and administrative role of the uniformed side of the ministry.”

Speaking during the handover of the Defence Office, Tuya's predecessor, Aden Duale, expressed confidence that she will bring a new perspective of leadership to the ministry.

"I'm confident she will address the challenges ahead with dedication and skill. I extend my full support to her and wish her every success in this critical role," Duale said on August 12.
