NYAMITA: Put students in right bands and merge bursaries

We should have free primary to secondary school, that will be the best thing and we will support.

In Summary
  • Let them amalgamate all the bursaries
  • If you only do free college and universities, secondary school is still going to be a challenge to millions of families.

I support the amalgamation of all the bursaries, loans and scholarship programmes.

They can take the one for Members of Parliament-Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF), National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF), County Government Bursaries and Presidential Secondary School Bursary and from all the other sectors then make education free.

This should not only apply to higher education. We should have free primary to secondary school, that will be the best thing and we will support.

Let them amalgamate all the bursaries, remove the NG-CDF one, which can go up to about 35 to 45 per cent of the fund, we are ok, but then they make education free from primary to secondary.

If you only do free college and universities, secondary school is still going to be a challenge to millions of families.

On the university funding model, I did a sensitisation campaign in my constituency the other day, my experience is that many students and parents have not been properly sensitised on the new system.

Even when they (students) were submitting their applications, they did not know what essentially they should attach and what they should not include.

So the sensitisation on the new funding model is what is actually lacking. When we did sensitisation in my constituency, many parents were surprised at the mistakes they, their sons and daughters had done.

A proper sensitisation should happen at the grassroots for all the students, parents and guardians.

Again, now that students have been categorised and loans and scholarships awarded, they need to open the appeal window immediately so that students can appeal in a proper way and be categorised in the rights bands.

The decision on the appeals should also be made pretty quickly to ensure no student is disadvantaged by sticking to a band that is not commensurate with the financial realities of their families.

The whole idea is to make education free for all.

It will be a major achievement because education is a major financial responsibility that eats up a large portion of a families income.
