On Thursday morning, a section of matatu operators blocked sections of  Ngong Road in Nairobi to protest over alleged police harassment.

The operators honked horns as they interrupted traffic flow seeking attention from police.

They claimed police have been harassing and extorting them to be allowed into business.

They demanded action from authorities to stop the alleged trend.

The first group camped at Dagoretti Corner in the Junction area and another at Prestige.

Kilimani police boss Ben Kobia said he talked to the group and they peacefully dispersed.

“They registered their issues and we are looking into them. We will take necessary action,” he said.

The group had blocked a section of Ngong Road for hours affecting traffic flow.

They claimed road users on the route are regularly harassed by traffic police who demand bribes.

Police deny the claims.

Kilimani police boss Ben Kobia asked any of the operators with evidence of the claims to present the same to them or any other authorities for action.

“The allegations are serious and we are unaware of the same so far. Let anyone with evidence come forward and provide the same for action,” he said

It took the arrival of Kobia and his team to convince the operators who had camped at the Ring Road-Ngong Road Junction for long to leave.

The protesters had also used stones to block the road.

This affected traffic flow on the busy route.
