The National Transport and Safety Authority has cautioned motorists to follow traffic rules ahead of school reopening on Monday, August 26, 2024.

NTSA said there will be enhanced enforcement and compliance checks mounted across the country to ensure noncompliant operators are kept off the road.

NTSA's road safety manager Samuel Musumba urged school transport and public services operators to ensure their vehicles are in good condition before setting on the road.

He said there will be an increased demand for transport by pupils and parents during the reopening period.

"Our message to all road users should be to prioritize the road safety for our children. The cases we have heard from the past are worrying," he said.

Musumba said that NTSA officers will stationed on the roads to ensure no traffic rules are broken.

He cautioned unroadworthy school buses operating on the roads saying they expose children to risk.

Schools are set to reopen on August 25, 2024, for the Third term.

On Saturday,  Acting Inspector General Gilbert Masengeli urged motorists to adhere to traffic rules.

He raised concerns about the increase in fatal and serious road traffic accidents since last month.

He pointed out the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway as the most prevalent of road accidents.

Acting IG Masengeli said most of the road crashes reported have been associated with human misbehaviour.

He said the accidents have been caused by motorists who are speeding, recklessness, driving under the influence of alcohol, and dangerous overtaking.

"We all have a responsibility to ensure that safety and order prevail on our roads at all times. I therefore urge all motorists to ensure strict compliance with traffic regulations and rules," he added.

This comes after a meeting between the National Police Service and leaders from the Kenya Matatu Council.

Masengeli said the meeting was geared towards enhancing road safety.

"The National Police Service in partnership with the National Transport and Safety Authority are working closely to enhance traffic law enforcement efforts," he added.
