Police in Busia arrested a suspected drug trafficker and seized 17 kilogrammes of bhang.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations in a statement on Monday said the woman was arrested as she tried to board a bus in Nambale, Busia.

Detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit in Busia arrested the suspect and the bhang valued at Sh514,000 seized.

The detectives who were acting on a tip-off, searched the woman and later found her carrying bhang weighing 17 kilogrammes.

The woman had allegedly loaded her luggage into the bus earlier on and was waiting to board the bus when she was nabbed, police said.

"The drugs were concealed in a brown traveling bag wrapped with a white cello tape and sandwiched with clothes," police said.

The woman was escorted suspect to Busia Police Station and booked pending arraignment.

She is expected to take plea on Monday for the trafficking of narcotics.

This is the latest seizure to be made in a series targeting traffickers in the country.

Police have in the past month made several arrests and seized thousands of kilograms of bhang in operations.

The cases are pending in courts. Most of the drugs originate from neighbouring countries, police say.
