Tanzania president Samia Suluhu has voiced her country’s support for Raila Odinga's African Union candidature.

Suluhu described Raila as a pan-Africanist who believes not only in the promise of African integration, but also in its practicality.

“Back in Tanzania, I am fondly referred to as 'Mama' so it's my pleasure to support the great statesman of Kenya, fondly referred to as Baba in his bid for AUC chairperson. He fits the bill,” she said.

“We must ensure our voice is heard loud and clear in global matters like climate change, trade and artificial intelligence. It is with all these in mind that the Tanzania government endorses the candidature of Raila Odinga.”

For Suluhu, the former Prime Minister has his work cut out and urged African leaders to work towards a united African Union to meet the desired development objectives.

“It is incumbent to ensure the AU remains united and meets the noble goals. We need to complete institution reforms to enhance accountability,” Suluhu said.

The Tanzania leader said a united AU would go a long way to “strengthening capacity to silence the guns in our continent”.

Suluhu said Raila was best suited to drive the development agenda by ensuring infrastructure plans and connectivity are realised.

“He is well-versed with development concerns hence his earlier endorsement as AU Infrastructure envoy. He knows what our union needs to do to make the infrastructure gaps critical to unlocking Africa’s potential,” Suluhu said.

Raila has maintained ties with not only Tanzanian leaders but also African leaders and partners, who hold him in high esteem.

“I know him not only as a wise statesman, but also as one who can make a strong case in advancing Africa’s development priorities. We believe he has what it takes to transform the vision of the assembly into tangible outcomes for our people.”

Kenya should therefore rest assured of Tanzania’s full support of the candidature of Raila for the position.
