Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Wednesday morning held a meeting with over 10 senators from the Mt Kenya region.

According to Gachagua, the meeting was to audit the success of the devolved units in their respective counties.

"I had a fruitful engagement with Senators from eleven Counties, to audit the success of Devolution in their respective counties," he said.

The Deputy President insisted that engagement with leaders will help in the development of the people they represent.

He said the meeting is a good way to get feedback on what the people are saying about their leaders.

"Continuous engagement with elected leaders is a catalyst to development for our people. It is also the best forum for feedback on what our employers think and feel about our leadership."

The senators include Kathuri Murungi (Meru), Joe Nyutu (Murang'a), Mwenda Gataya (Thara Nithi), Karungo Thang'wa (Kiambu), Alexander Mundigi (Embu), and Methu Muhia (Nyandarua).

Others were Kamau Murango (Kirinyaga), Wahome Wamatinga (Nyeri), Tabitha Karanja (Nakuru), Joseph Kamau Githuku (Lamu), John Kinyua (Laikipia) and nominated senator Veronica Maina.

The meeting comes against the backdrop of Gachagua trying to position himself as the Mt Kenya region's kingpin.

He is the most senior politician in the country.

His efforts have, however, been met with some dissenting voices who have publicly dismissed him as the region's representative.

Gachagua faces a herculean task in consolidating his Mt Kenya backyard as silent rebellion grows against his bid to lead the region.

He warned rebels that they have until December to change or be kicked out by voters.

“By this year December, the decision would have been made on who will be coming back and who is going home,” Gachagua said.

“After December, you cannot change anything. For those who have lost track, you have until December to get back on track,” he added.

Mt Kenya residents have put the said leaders on notice, Gachagua said, adding that their fate would be sealed soon if they do not change.

“As we prepare ahead of the 2027 elections, take note the coming election will be very competitive. You know I am that person who listens to the ground. Some serious decisions have already been made.”

However, several Mt Kenya leaders, mostly allied to President William Ruto, vowed they would not succumb to what they called ‘Gachagua’s threats’.

The defiance comes despite the DP’s escalated political activities and efforts to ‘unite’ the region.
