Former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo has hailed Kenya's campaign in favour of Raila Odinga’s bid for the AUC chairmanship.

While appreciating President William Ruto for the show, Obasanjo said the event at State House was historic.

He applauded Ruto for giving the country’s candidate “so much support at home and making him the candidate of the East African Community”.

“We have never had an occasion like what we are doing today. I want to thank and salute President Ruto,” Obasanjo said.

The prevailing issues of a fractured world ridden with conflict and wars, not only in Africa but also globally, required the type of leadership Raila offers.

“We are suffering from hunger in Africa. We have a situation of insecurity, instability, unpredictability. We are wallowing in poverty instead of shared prosperity,” he stated.

The continent should put its affairs in order to effectively handle the situation.

“We cannot get out of this unless we put our house in order and do what we have to do individually as countries in Africa and collectively as a continent,” Obasanjo said.

He hailed Raila’s plans for a visa for African states, saying he was looking forward to getting one.

“Raila said we will have an AU visa, I am waiting for it. I will never stop asking you for it when you get there. The reason is this; I have been invited to conferences in Africa and I couldn’t answer the invitation because I couldn’t get a visa,” he said.
