Tharaka Nithi: Tuesday night fire destroys dormitory at Kamarandi Secondary

The incident happened hours after the students had reported to school for the third term.

The dormitory at Kamarandi Mixed Day and Boarding School in Chiakariga, Tharaka Nithi, was destroyed by fire on Tuesday night.

According to police, the incident happened hours after the students had reported to school for the third term.

The students were waiting to be served supper at about 7 pm when a huge fire was spotted at the said boys' dormitory which houses about 30 students.

All mattresses, beddings, uniforms, boxes, books and other personal effects were consumed by the inferno. The roofing was also partially burnt, police said.

The fire was put off by the students, teachers and non-teaching staff using water and fire extinguishers.

Police confirmed that all students are safe and they investigating the incident.

Elsewhere in Kisumu County, police are investigating arson in a case where a man burnt a house in a domestic fight on Tuesday.

The man is said to have come home and picked a quarrel with his parents over domestic issues and further assaulted them.

According to police, the man set ablaze their house and escaped thereafter.

“Efforts to put off the fire by the public were futile," police said.

The whole iron sheet building house was reduced to ashes with all household goods.

“The value of the burned yet to be established," police said.

Police officers from Dago station visited the scene station led by the station boss who said they had called experts to the scene to help in probing the incident.
