Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba has come out to defend Embakasi East MP Babu Owino after Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni censured him for teaming up with opposition figures in his country.

Speaking at the launch of Raila Odinga’s African Union Commission chairmanship candidature at State House, Nairobi, Museveni criticized MP Babu for supporting Ugandan opposition figures.

“Why would a foreign president use an international presidential platform to castigate a young Kenyan parliamentarian?” Wamuchomba questioned.

“I saw leaders giggle as if he was making a ‘good’ joke. This was uncalled for.”

During his address, Museveni claimed that Babu’s name frequently features in intelligence reports related to anti-National Resistance Movement (NRM) activities.

The NRM, Uganda’s ruling party led by Museveni, has been at odds with opposition movements.

MP Babu is a vocal advocate for Ugandan opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, commonly known as Bobi Wine.

“There are some individuals in Raila's group who think I don’t know what they are doing. I am a consumer of intelligence services. I always see intelligence service reports. There's a character called Babu. I always see Babu dealing with anti-NRM groups in Uganda,” Museveni said

Museveni went on to state that despite previously refraining from accusations, he felt compelled to address Babu Owino directly this time.

But Wamuchomba rallied behind MP Babu saying his future lies in Kenya, and not in Uganda.

“Hon Babu Owino has a future in Kenya, not in Uganda. I stand with Babu,” she declared
