Two children were Sunday night injured in a fire incident in Kinyago slums, Nairobi.

Police say the two sustained injuries after the fire burnt down at least three structures in the slums.

Locals, however, managed to contain the spread of the fire.

It was after putting out the fire that they realized the two minors had sustained serious injuries, police said.

The victims, aged three and six years, were rushed to the Mama Lucy Hospital and admitted.

Buruburu police boss Francis Kamau said they are stable in the hospital.

“Preliminary investigations suggest that a burning candle may have sparked the fire,” Kamau said.

The police boss said said police are investigating the incident.

Elsewhere, fire broke out in the kitchen of a church on Sunday.

A security guard on duty said the fire originated from the church’s kitchen.

Kitchen equipment and goods of unknown value were destroyed.

The fire is suspected to have been caused by an electrical fault, police said.

Police said the blaze was extinguished by local residents.

However, a man who took part in extinguishing the fire sustained an eye injury from a gas extinguisher he was using.

He was later taken to hospital and is in fair condition.

In another incident, a fire in Ngara, Nairobi, which started at a food kiosk, destroyed three cars and several general merchant shops.

Investigations show that the fire which blew out gas cylinders in the Ngara area, Nairobi, emanated from a food kiosk, police said.

Three cars that were at a garage near the premise and other general merchant shops were burnt.

Nairobi Fire Brigade and General Service Unit water canons responded and assisted in putting off the fire where no casualty was reported.

The incident rekindled memories of the Embakasi gas explosions in February 2024 which left 10 people dead and property valued at millions destroyed.

Police are still investigating the incidents.
