Imagine a community where everyone feels confident and informed about their sexual health.

A world where we can easily and openly talk about the physical, spiritual and mental wellbeing in relation to sexuality.

This is the world that Tashie Muthoni is living in and one that she advocates for.

"For me sexual health is more than just physical. It is more of spiritual," she says.

"I have read online of people getting and carrying bad spirits just because they had sex with some partners. For your sexual health, self-control is key."

According to World Health Organisation, sexual health is a state of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being in relation to sexuality. It is not merely the absence of disease, dysfunction or infirmity.

On this day, September 4, the world celebrates Sexual Health Day which aims to raise awareness about the importance of sexual health, rights, justice and pleasure for all.

World Sexual Health Day (WSHD) aims to promote education, dialogue, and action around sexual health and rights to ensure that everyone has access to accurate information and services.

WSHD promotes the need to make sexual health a global priority. It is also a day to celebrate and honor our rights to pleasure, autonomy, and respect.

The celebration was coined in 2010 by the World Association for Sexual Health (WAS) in an effort to promote a greater social awareness on sexual health across the globe.

The first celebration was guided by then World Association for Sexual Health president Rosemary Coates of Australia.

WSHD has been celebrated in 60 countries with a wide range of activities from round tables of discussion to conferences and art exhibitions.

According to WAS, one of the essential things WSHD focuses on is recognising sexual health as a human right.

This year's theme for WSHD is "+Relationships", which emphasises the significance of fostering positive aspects in various relationships, a cornerstone of sexual health.

The first World Sexual Health Day theme was "Let's talk about it," a message designed to  start breaking fears and taboos surrounding sexuality.

The 2023 theme of the WASHD was "Consent!",  recognising the importance of consent and mutual respect when it comes to sexual encounters.
