Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba has celebrated the successful implementation of the school feeding programme in her constituency.

The programme is now fully operational in 48 public primary schools within the constituency.

She said this initiative provides daily meals to around 20,000 students, marking a significant advancement in educational support for the region.

“This program is a major achievement for our community. By ensuring that our students receive a nutritious meal each day, we are addressing one of the critical barriers to education—hunger.” Wamuchomba said

The MP highlighted that the initiative aims not only to combat food insecurity but also to improve overall student retention, boost enrolment rates and enhance academic performance.

The program has also had a positive impact on local employment, creating over 300 new jobs primarily for young people under the age of 30.

These roles are spread across food preparation and distribution, offering valuable work opportunities to the youth in the community.

The central kitchen, which was funded and constructed by the National Government Constituency Development Fund, Githunguri, plays a key role in this effort.

It ensures that meals are prepared in a central location and then distributed to the schools by 11 a.m. daily.

Wamuchomba noted that the central kitchen's efficient operation is crucial for maintaining the program's effectiveness.

“The timely preparation and distribution of meals ensure that all participating schools receive their food on schedule, which is vital for the smooth running of the program,” she explained.

In addition to its immediate benefits, the program is expected to have long-term positive effects on the educational system in Githunguri.

“We are already seeing improvements in student attendance and engagement. This is a clear sign that the program is making a difference,” Wamuchomba stated.

Looking to the future, Wamuchomba expressed a strong commitment to expanding the program.

“Our next step is to extend the feeding initiative to all-day secondary schools in the constituency. This expansion will provide additional support to older students and further enhance their educational experience,” she said

Wamuchomba concluded with a note of optimism about the program's impact.

“Githunguri will never be the same again,” she said.

"The successful rollout of the program represents a significant investment in the future of Githunguri’s students, addressing both educational and economic needs in the community."
