Education Cabinet Secretary Migosi Ogamba, who cut short his trip in China on Friday, is expected to visit Hillside Endarasha Academy in Nyeri where a fire killed at least 17 pupils.

The CS told the Star that he had arrived in the country in the wee hours of Saturday morning and headed straight to Nyeri where he is expected to assess the situation.

The boys died after a fire ripped through their dormitory at around 3 am on Friday, burning their bodies beyond recognition and leaving 14 others nursing injuries.

Ogamba said his ministry will work with the Interior and National Administration and other relevant state agencies to address the incident and support the victims and their families.

"We will undertake a quick, thorough and comprehensive investigation into the incident," Ogamba said.

The CS who took the next available flight from Beijing on Friday morning is on a non-stop journey to Hillside Endarasha Academy to offer support for the affected families and provide a roadmap on how the government will address the incident.

Ogamba was part of a delegation that accompanied President William Ruto on his official trip to China.

He told the Star that he received news of the tragic death of the young learners with "great shock and sadness".

"On my behalf and behalf of the Ministry of Education, I extend our deepest condolences to the families and relatives of the deceased. We wish a quick recovery to those injured in the unfortunate and regrettable incident," he said.

The Hillside Endarasha Academy fire is one of the worst incidents in schools that have claimed the lives of young souls in the recent past.

President Ruto has called for a comprehensive and swift investigation to establish the cause of the fire and hold those responsible to account.
