Three killed in Kericho accident involving five vehicles

Three people have perished in a road accident involving five vehicles at Kapmakaa area in Kericho county.

Kericho County Traffic Enforcement Officer Selina Chirchir said a Toyota Hiace matatu travelling from Londiani heading to Kericho collided with a oil tanker that was travelling to the opposite side along the Kericho-Mau Summit road.

She said the accident occured at about 3.45 pm.

“The driver of the oil tanker lost control of the vehicle and hit the matatu head on causing it to roll,” she said.

Three other cars which were behind the matatu were also hit by the tanker.

Chirchir said the dead include a woman and two men who were travelling in the matatu that was caught up in the accident.

Several passengers who were in the matatu were taken to Kericho County Referral Hospital for treatment with various degrees of injuries.

However, Chirchir said none of the drivers in the vehicles were injured in the accident.

The traffific boss said they are investigating the cause of the accident although heavy rains pounding the region could be a cause of poor visibility for drivers.

The accident comes two days after three people died in another accident involving a lorry ferrying LPG gas and a government vehicle at Fort Tenan in the same county.

“We are semsitising our drivers to stop in case of poor visibility on the roads and also observe all other traffic regulations,” Chirchir said.
