President William Ruto has launched an initiative aimed at verifying and validating all major projects currently under implementation in various parts of the country.

The exercise to be undertaken by the office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary in partnership with that of the Interior will be done in phases commencing September 10-14 and targets Eastern and Coast regions.

It will later be cascaded to the six other regions of North Eastern, Nairobi, Central, Rift Valley, Nyanza and Western, the National Government Coordination Secretariat said in a statement.

“The purpose of the exercise is to validate the status of the selected “High Impact Projects and Programmes” for the Financial Year 2023/2024,” it said.

It is based on the information provided by the Ministries, Departments and State Agencies (MDAs).

The verification teams who include the MDAs' focal persons will document issues and identify bottlenecks for better coordination of service delivery.

The initiative is seen as a move by the government to reassure Kenyans of its commitment to complete all started projects in the country.

This is in the wake of concerns that several major projects that have been launched have stalled despite millions of money being pumped into them.

Among the projects and programmes lined up in the first phase are the completion of Kenya Leather Industrial Park (Kenanie Leather Industrial Park) in Machakos and the expansion of acreage under cotton production from 26,000 acres to 200,000 acres and availing of BT cotton seeds in the two regions.

The team will also assess the progress with regard to the establishment of County Aggregation and Industrial Parks in the counties, completion and operationalisation of SEZs in Athi River Dongo Kundu and construction of 200,000 Affordable Housing units.

Areas targeted in Eastern are Moke Gardens in Machakos where 4,118 units are being put up, civil servants houses in Embu and Embu NHC Affordable housing (400 units) project.

In Coast is the Mzizima Estate in Mombasa with a total of 1,582 units and Matuga AFH in Kwale where 172 units are being built.

Construction of 6,000 Km Roads (3,500 km under conventional method and 2,500 km of low-volume seal roads and expansion of Technical Vocational Education and Training have also been lined up.

Other projects are the completion of the Bachuma Livestock Export Zone (LEZ) and the construction and operationalisation of Lamu LEZ.

Development and operationalisation of Mombasa port, National liquefied petroleum gas enhancement, construction and improvement of the National Government Administration Infrastructure are also set for inspection.

On Blue Economy Investment and Development, the focus will be on the ultra-modern Tuna Fish hub at Liwatoni in Mombasa and the expansion of the existing Irrigation Scheme, particularly the Galana-Kulalu food security project.
