KEMRI to offer free DNA testing for Hillside fire victims

The experts will help speed up identification and offer closure to families.

Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) has dispatched experts to help in the identification of Hillside Endarsha Academy fire victims at no cost.

In a statement on Tuesday, KEMRI Chairperson Abdulahi Ali said the team drawn from the Human Identification Laboratory will assist in the process of identifying the bodies.

Ali said that the institute will cover the cost of the DNA testing services for the affected families.

He noted that the experts will help speed up identification and offer some measure of closure to devastated families.

"In collaboration with the multi-agency government task force, including the Government Chemist, KEMRI's team has commenced the collection and analysis of DNA samples," Ali said. 

The team from KEMRI is scheduled to receive additional tissue samples from the victims on Wednesday, after autopsies that are to be conducted by the chief Government Pathologist.

On Friday night a fire ripped through a boys' dormitory, burning 21 pupils to death beyond recognition.

Parents have asked to provide DNA samples to help in the identification of their children's bodies.

“Our hearts go to the grieving parents during this most difficult time. KEMRI is fully committed to supporting the families and assisting them in finding the closure they need,” Ali said.

The KEMRI laboratory is known for its advanced expertise in DNA testing and is well-equipped to handle this vital task.

It has previously provided DNA testing support during national and regional emergencies, reinforcing its reputation as a leader in forensic identification.

The laboratory, known for its proficiency in forensic and familial DNA testing, is stepping up in this time of need and urgency.

The Institution said that its involvement underscores its pivotal role in providing crucial service and support in this difficult time of disaster.

"As the identification process is to progress, KEMRI remains dedicated to ensuring that families affected by this tragedy get the assistance they require," Ali said.
