September 13, two years ago, President William Ruto took oath of office becoming the new Chief executive of Kenya.

Today, we mark the first two years of his reign, and despite the many challenges that have followed, his administration has been able to register gains in various sectors.

One of the areas we will look at is the Digital Superhighway and Creative Economy, which is set to help create employment for young Kenyans.

In actualising this, Ruto’s administration has been able to increase installation of Fibre Optic Cable by over 111 per cent.

This translates to some 9,867 kilometres of installed and operationalised fibre optic cable countrywide.

“This is an increase from 8,900 Kms in 2022 to 18,767 Kms in 2024.”

This is to ensure universal broadband availability throughout the country by installation of optic fibre and installation of JiConnect Hotspots.

The project has also seen the establishment of 1,490 Wi-Fi Hot spots countrywide and another 274 Digital Hubs.

Some 6,804 digital devices have been distributed across the 274 Digital Hubs.

This is aimed at promoting development of software for export through employment of the youth through Jitume and Ajira Programs.

It is also aimed at enhancing government service delivery through digitisation by onboarding government services in e-Citizen platform.

In the last two years, the Kenya Kwanza administration has also increased digital literacy training by 598 per cent.

In 2022 the number of those registered for the digital Literacy to prepare them for online work was 73,948, in 2024 the number rose to 516,505.

The number of youth employed through the Ajira and Jitume Digital Jobs Programmes, has increased to 152,711. In 2022 only 30,000 were registered.

The number of digitalised Government Services on the e-Citizen platform has increased from 350 in 2022 to 20,855 in 2024. These services are enabled for people with Disability, starting with sight and hearing.

The monthly revenue collected from digitalized government services has also increased from Sh1.45 billion per month in 2022 to KSH 10.9 billion in 2024.
