Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba has dismissed the move by a section of Mt Kenya legislators to endorse Interior CS Kithure Kindiki as the region's kingpin.

Wamuchomba on Friday criticised the move which she claimed is aimed at isolating Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

This follows a recent Nyahururu declaration by a coalition of at least 48 MPs from Mt Kenya, declared their allegiance to Kindiki as the battle for the control of the region gathers momentum.

In a meeting held in Nyahururu on Thursday, the MPs said that after consultations, they have agreed that there is a need to have a link that will create a nexus with the Executive on matters of development.

But in a rejoinder, Wamuchomba said the MPs have lost touch with their voters when they voted yes to the finance bills in 2023 and 2024.

"I don't care who the nexus to national government is. All that matters is if the voters are getting the promised yields and returns in Coffee milk and tea and if the million promises made by Kenya Kwanza government are delivered to our voters," Wamuchomba said.

Wamuchomba said the declaration has failed to address pressing local issues.

“This recent declaration is more about political positioning than about solving the real problems our voters are facing. We need to focus on the issues that directly impact our communities, such as the unresolved aftermath of the Endarasha fire and the evictions from the Marikiti market,” Wamuchomba stated.

"If these MPs were in touch with their voters they should have demanded for fair treatment of victims of house demolitions in Mathare, pipeline and Mai Mahiu dam tragedy victims."

The Nyahururu declaration, made by the MPs, seeks to consolidate support for Kindiki.

The MPs declared that as elected leaders from the region and diaspora, they had unanimously resolved that their link to the national government be through Kindiki.

They emphasised Kindiki’s role in coordinating national functions as critical for their regional interests.

However, Wamuchomba argued that this focus on internal politics is misplaced.

“Instead of engaging in these high-stakes political games, our leaders should be addressing the immediate needs of the people they represent,” she said.

Wamuchomba noted that the declaration also comes on the heels of the MPs’ controversial support for finance bills in 2023 and 2024, which have been criticized for their harsh impact on voters.

“The support for these finance bills has already caused a lot of frustration. Our focus should be on addressing these grievances rather than shifting political allegiances,” Wamuchomba noted.

“What truly matters is whether the government delivers on its promises and effectively addresses daily life issues. Leaders will be judged not by their political maneuvers but by their ability to resolve the real problems faced by their constituents,” sheWamuchomba.

In what will no doubt pan out as a do-or-die duel between Gachagua and the Interior CS ahead of 2027, the new lot joins a group of 20 others from Mt Kenya region who named Kindiki as their political godfather on Monday.

The endorsement of Kindiki as their link to the Executive is the latest blow to the second in command who would ordinarily be the point man of the region to the national government.
