The Architectural Association of Kenya now wants families of those injured and dead during the Shauri Moyo sewer tragedy compensated.

This comes after at least four workers were killed Friday morning after walls of a sewer line they were constructing collapsed in Nairobi’s Shauri Moyo area.

Three others were rescued in the tragedy that occurred at about 5 am.

AAK president Florence Nyole in a statement on Saturday further demanded that te contractor responsible be identified and held accountable.

The association further raised concern that no immediate measures had been implemented to secure the area to prevent further harm.

"The county government of Nairobi must urgently secure the site to prevent further risks to residents and commuters," Nyole said.

The association has raised concern that the site was unsecured, with lose red coffee soil contributing to the collapse trapping the construction workers.

Similary, the association wondered why there were workers on site operating at night beyond the permissible hours of 8 am to 5 pm.

A team from the association that visited the site further noted that n open sewer channel flowed directly into the excavation site, demostrating a lack of proper planning for temporary solutions during the works.

"Formwork erection and bracing were inadequately eecuted, raising concerns  about construction management and safety procedures. An excavation trench of this depth (at least five metres) should be properly secured against collapse," Nyole said.

National Police Service spokesperson Resila Onyango said rescue teams rescued three people.

“They were excavating a sewerage line when it collapsed. We have lost four while three have been rescued,” she said.

Rescuers from the county government and Kenya Red Cross responded to the site and managed to rescue the three.
