Crimes of the week: Horror as fires continue to raze schools

The horrors of fire incidents and suicides have dominated headlines this week, even as other crimes took a backseat.

The country has been thrown into a worrying state as the fires which began last week continue.

One of the latest incidents happened in Isiolo where a dormitory at Wami Boys was destroyed at around 8:20 pm on Monday.

Police said they managed to put out the fire with the help of a fire engine from the county government.

There were no injuries to the students and staff, police said, adding that they were yet to establish the cause of the fire

Another recent case of school fire happened in Kilifi South on Tuesday where Ngombeni Girls High School principal reported the incident at around 9:30 pm.

The incident happened while students were in their evening classes, police said.

Police officers responded and found that one of the dormitories, which housed 160 students, had caught fire.

Police said they managed to put out the fire with the help of students, staff and the Kilifi County Fire Brigade.

Property of unknown value was destroyed but no casualties were reported, and the cause of the fire was not yet known.

Suicides

In what police have termed as an alarming state of events, several suicide incidents were reported on Sunday.

The separate suicides included one in Mukuyuni, Makueni County where a 19-year-old hanged himself. 

Police said Patrick Mwendo used a piece of clothing to take his life at his father's homestead within Ukonze village.

Police said they are yet to establish the motive of the incident.

The body was picked up and taken to a local mortuary pending autopsy.

In a shocking incident in Bahati, Subukia, Nakuru county, the body of 37-year-old Boniface Njuguna was found hanging on a barbed wire.

The wire hung on one of the roof rafters in his father’s house. A suicide note was found at the scene but the contents were not made public.

The body was moved to the mortuary for postmortem examination.

In Imbiakalo, Kakamega county, Emmanuel Muhatia, 58, died by suicide by hanging himself with a manila rope on a mango tree.

The incident happened in Bulupi village, police said.

No suicide note was found at the scene when the body was picked up at the mortuary for postmortem.

In Kanyariri, Kabete, Kiambu county, 24-year-old Samuel Kimani died by suicide by plunging into a dam.

Divers who were in the vicinity of the dam rushed and rescued him but he died at the Wangige Level 4 Hospital.

Police said no suicide note was found and the motive behind the incident is unknown. 

Theft

In a separate incident, police began investigations into an incident where suspected thugs broke into Mediheal Hospital in Eldoret and stole equipment.

According to police and the management, the said robbery took place on Wednesday morning, where the said thieves accessed the theatre room at the facility and escaped with equipment valued at Sh3 million.

Staff reporting to work said they found the door to the room half open.

He later found the ultrasound machine, diathermy machine, and two neuroscope machines missing.

It is not clear who was behind the incident that insiders said had affected work.

Police who visited the scene established that the door was not locked the previous day but was not broken.

No arrest has been made so far in connection with the incident.
