KWS wardens on Saturday rescued a female giraffe that was stuck in a muddy water pan at Bur-Der in Wajir South.

The rescue efforts were coordinated by Warden Shariff Ahmed assisted by officers from the Kenya Forest Service (KFS).

"The giraffe was safely released back to its habitat," KWS said in a statement on X.

"As the dry season continues in Wajir, we urge the community to create space for wildlife by leaving water in troughs overnight to prevent animals from accessing deep water pans and shallow wells," the agency added.

Wajir is generally a dry region with supressed rainfall all year round and residents, who are largely pastoralists, construct water pans to harvest the little rain for their livestock.

Wild animals help themselves to the water whenever they occassionally wander from their natural habitats.

KWS urged members of the public to report any such incidences through its toll free hotline 0800-597-000 or WhatsApp on 0726-610-509 for immediate intervention.

The help lines are active 24/7, KWS said.

"By working together, we can safeguard our wildlife for posterity. Karibuni, Tutunze Pamoja," KWS said.
