Youths from the Mt Kenya East region have backed calls by the political class and elders to have Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki lead the region as its link to the Executive.

In a statement on Sunday, the youth who gathered in Chuka Town said Kindiki represents the ideals of a new Kenya and they associate with his leadership.

“We align ourselves with the vision and leadership of Kindiki, who embodies the ideals of a New Kenya; a Kenya free from ethnic bias, hatred and division, where people from all backgrounds have equal opportunities, where peace and development prevail, and where the contributions of every citizen are valued.

“We support the call for Kindiki to lead Mt Kenya East’s engagement in national discussions that will create networks at the national level to move Kenya forward,” the youths said in a joint statement.

The Mt Kenya East youths insisted that Kindiki is best placed to address the many challenges they face in the region including unemployment.

“We believe Kindiki is uniquely positioned to lead efforts in our region to combat this issue, working alongside like-minded leaders across the nation.

"Our region is undergoing a significant political transition. As young leaders of the Mt Kenya East Region, we acknowledge the recent political discourse by our elected representatives advocating for Mt. Kenya East to emerge as an independent political bloc.”

The declaration comes a few days after 69 MPs from the Mt Kenya region backed Kindiki to take the lead in promoting the region's interests and be their link to the Executive.

On Saturday, over 500 elders from the counties of Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi also threw their weight behind Kindikito be the Mt Kenya East region's point man to President William Ruto and his administration.
