The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission has grilled 20 Nakuru top county officials over alleged conflict of interest and misuse of public funds in the procurement of sport kits at Sh27 million.

Among those grilled at the EACC South Regional Offices in Nakuru were finance, sports, and procurement officers.

The exercise began on Monday, September 2, 2024.

EACC Spokesperson Eric Ngumbi said that the Commission is aware of the public interest nature of the alleged sports kit fiasco and has prioritised the matter to inform the prosecution of any culpable persons.

He added that the Commission will also file civil suits to recover any money lost in the alleged fraudulent procurement deal.

In a letter seen by the Star, 14 officials from Nakuru County were on August 28, invited for interview and statement recording at the county-based EACC South Rift Regional Offices.

The 14 were summoned in relation to Sh27 million procurement in the acquisition of sports kits and equipment.

It is suspected that companies allegedly owned by top county officials were irregularly awarded contracts and received payments for the supply of poor-quality equipment.

The grilled officials are also among 13 from Bomet County who allegedly took part in the alleged misuse of public funds in the Sh373 million procurement of road construction equipment.

This took place during the Financial Year 2022-23.

They were summoned in a letter dated August 30 and addressed to the Bomet County Secretary.

The EACC had stated that they appear before commissioners between September 9 and September 13.

The interviews and statement recording are ongoing.
