More than 1.2 million Kenyans have voluntarily registered with the Social Health Authority (SHA), Health Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa has said.

Speaking during the launch of the countrywide training, Barasa has called on Kenyans to complete their registration promptly to ensure uninterrupted access to healthcare services under the new scheme.

The registration portal was opened on July 1, 2024.

Barasa said through SHA, the government will be able to ensure comprehensive coverage across the nation.

It will also ensure improved operational efficiency for better patient outcomes, and fortify health financing systems.

"The encouraging response from over 1.2 million individuals who have voluntarily registered reflects a collective effort towards enhancing healthcare accessibility in the country," Barasa said.

The Ministry of Health has rolled out nationwide training sessions in preparation for the rollout of services by the SHA.

The CS said the ministry, through the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council is working with all health facilities including public, private and faith based on full registration and licensure in readiness for the rollout of services under SHA.

The defunct National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) will officially cease operations on September 30, marking the end of an era for the country's previous healthcare financing model.

Starting October 1, SHA will take over, under the new, digitised platform.

"SHA will facilitate the seamless transfer of existing NHIF members to the innovative system," Barasa emphasised.

The National Training of Trainers on the digital health portal aims to empower healthcare workers with the necessary skills to enhance the quality of healthcare services.

"SHA promises a more efficient and inclusive health service system, paving way for Universal Healthcare across Kenya,"  she said.

Present during the launch include PS Medical Services Harry Kimtai, Director General for Health Patrick Amoth, SHA chairperson Timothy Olweny and the acting CEO Elijah Wachira.

Amoth highlighted the significance of the training as a pivotal step towards achieving Universal Health Coverage.
