Ruto appoints Abdi Mohamed new Social Health Authority Board Chairman

Dr Mohamed replaces Timothy Olweny who was appointed in November 2023

President William Ruto has appointed Dr Abdi Mohamed as the chairman of the Social Health Authority Board.

Mohamed replaces Timothy Olweny, who was appointed in November 2023.

The new chairman will serve in the role for three years, effective September 17, 2024.

Before his appointment, Mohamed has been serving as the Social Health Authority Independent Board Director.

Health CS Deborah Barasa has consequently appointed Olweny to be the Chairperson of the Board of the National Cancer Institute for three years.

Mohamed also served as Takaful Umbrella Fund Trustee to help oversee the operations of the scheme and support growth and appropriate investments.

He was also an Independent Director at Villgro Kenya providing oversight on investment deals as well as feedback, guidance, and support to incubate.

Mohamed was the National Chair of the Kenya Association of Private Hospitals.

Kenya Association of Private Hospitals (KAPH) is an organisation that represents small and medium-sized hospitals and clinics across the country.

It is a voluntary membership organisation that negotiates on behalf of members with the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) which is a government body.

He was also the Kenya Medical Association chairperson of the Disciplinary and Ethics Committee overseeing complaints handling against doctors and institutions, and supporting the regulation of professional conduct. 

He is the co-founder, CEO and managing director of Ladnan Hospital.

Ladnan Hospital is a 50-bed tertiary care centre located in Pangani, Nairobi, Kenya, offering inpatient and outpatient services.

Mohamed established the health facility from the ground up, operationalising it and growing it.

He spearheaded the day-to-day operations of the hospital, from the management of hundreds of general staff, doctors, and specialists, to hospital administration and budgetary oversight.

Dr Mohamed was also a council member of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council among many other roles.
