The Cabinet on Tuesday made a raft of proposals to enhance the government's service delivery.

President William Ruto chaired the inaugural meeting of his reconstituted broad-based cabinet.

In a despatch, the Cabinet agreed to establish the Kenya Watershed Services Improvement Programme to combat climate change.

"In line with the nation's advancing global leadership on climate change and adaptation, the Cabinet considered and approved the establishment of the Kenya Watershed Services Improvement Programme (KEWASIP)," the despatch reads in part.

"This seminal programme seeks to preserve the nation’s rich heritage through the restoration of degraded landscapes while enhancing watershed services and building climate resilience across the country."

The Cabinet said the programme aligns with Kenya’s commitments to global environmental goals.

These include the Bonn Challenge, which calls for the restoration of 350 million hectares of degraded and deforested landscapes by 2030, and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), which requires each member state to formulate Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) targets aimed at addressing the main causes of land degradation.

The Cabinet further affirmed Kenya’s rich biodiversity as one of the nation’s most strategic assets and natural wealth.

This, they said, positions the country as a conservation and tourism destination second to none.

It was also briefed on the progress of the ongoing 2024–25 national wildlife census.

The cabinet said that the census marks Kenya's second such effort and demonstrates the leadership in implementing bold actions to conserve and promote ecological wealth.

According to the Cabinet, the state's interventions respond effectively to threats facing botanical and zoological life and their habitats, updating the annotated inventory of the wildlife resources, and thereby acknowledging their significance as crucial national assets.

Cabinet further approved the hosting of the Third African Forum on Cybercrime in November 2024.

"As a testament to our commitment to enhancing the meetings, Conventions, and Exhibits (MICE) tourism, the Cabinet approved the hosting of the Third African Forum on Cybercrime in November 2024," the dispatch read.

The Cabinet further approved the calendar of activities to mark the United Nations World Tourism Day/Week in September 2024.

The week-long event, running from September 22 to 29, will include free entry to all parks on September 28, 2024.
