As the clamour for the deputy president’s position continues, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has stated that the Mt Kenya region is not short of qualified leaders to occupy national positions.

She said there are many seasoned and qualified leaders whose track records have been tested and proven and that no seat is reserved for a particular person.

In March this year, President William Ruto hinted that his party would consider fielding a woman running mate in the near future.

Ruto, who spoke during the Women Governors Caucus G7 Strategy launch in Nairobi, said this would ensure the UDA party fully implements the two-thirds gender rule.

The governor said the President had demonstrated his faith in her by sending her to represent him last Sunday at Baricho Catholic Church where Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was also in attendance.

Waiguru who was addressing Mwea residents on Monday while distributing assorted socio-economic empowerment items to self-help groups highlighted numerous development projects that her administration has implemented saying the county has greatly benefitted from the good rapport with Ruto’s government.

She said her administration has constructed 18 modern markets while the national government has invested 11 more.

She also pointed out that the national government has committed to equip the upcoming Kimbimbi and Kianyaga Level 4 Hospitals once construction is completed.

“The President has also committed to tarmac roads across the county to boost the road network. My re-election was based on my performance record,” the governor who is on her second term told residents.

She reiterated that the Mt Kenya region will remain firmly behind Ruto as he fulfils his development agenda saying divisive politics will disadvantage the region.

The region, she noted, cannot afford to be in the opposition and called for leaders to work together and focus on development ahead of the 2027 elections.

“We will remain united as we implement our development agenda and come 2027 we will ask for votes based on our performance,” she said.

Earlier this month, Waiguru received blessings from the Njuri Ncheke Council in Meru to seek higher political positions.

She however urged residents to vote for development-oriented leaders to succeed her and shun politicians who regurgitate empty rhetoric.

This comes as 48 MPs from the region endorsed Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as their leader.

The MPs said since 2022, they had lacked a proper channel of fronting their developmental concerns and priorities to the national government that they said has hindered the region’s development.
