Nairobi County Chief Officer in Charge of Environment Geoffrey Mosiria has issued a formal notice to a church in Kawangware over noise pollution.

Mosiria, who visited the area on Tuesday night at 9 pm, confirmed that the church's noise level was "excessive", despite having only a small number of people present.

"We have issued a formal notice to the church, demanding a reduction in noise levels. Should they fail to comply, we will take appropriate legal measures to address this issue," Mosiria said.

Mosiria noted that the area residents have been suffering due to noise pollution, adding that it was unacceptable.

The church is said to play loud music from Monday to Sunday, 6 pm to 9 am the following day.

The Environment officer said the residents started lodging complaints with the police at Muthangari Police Station on December 1, 2023.

However, instead of addressing the issue, the complainants were detained, while the church's pastor continued to operate without consequence.

In a video seen by the Star during Mosiria's visit, loud music from the church can be heard.

The residents, who are barely audible, tell Mosiria that they have had talks with the church leadership thrice, to no avail.

One resident who took the county officer to her house said she was forced to take her children somewhere else for them to concentrate and do their homework.

"Hatuwezi lala.  Hiii kitu tumejaribu kufanya maandamano, tumechoma tire kwa barabara, tumeenda hata kwa chief,"  a woman says.

(We cannot sleep. We have tried even demonstrating and have burned tires, we have even gone to the chief).

The loud music from the church can be heard from one of the houses, which according to the residents, is nothing compared to the noise made at 3 am.

"Hatuna amani hata kidogo (We have no peace at all)," the residents say.
