Kenya to mark World Clean up Day 2024 on Friday

Kenya will on Friday join the global community in marking the 2024 World Clean Up Day whose aim is to raise awareness on waste mismanagement by mobilising the society to participate in cleanup actions.

In a statement on Thursday, the National Environment Management Authority (Nema) said the event will be held at the Michuki Memorial Park, Nairobi.

“This year's theme is Make Room for Life, #Towards Zero Waste!” Deputy director, of corporate communication, Evans Nyabuto, said.

He said Cabinet Secretary, of the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change,, and Forestry, Aden Duale, will be the guest of honour.

“On this day, individuals, governments, corporations, and organisations are all encouraged to take part in cleanups and to find solutions to tackle mismanaged waste,” Nyabuto said.

Declared results for the 2023 exercise as per the 2023 Annual Report indicate that 19.1 million people participated in the clean-up exercise last year worldwide.

The report says a total of 198 countries and territories took part in the exercise, including 90 percent of UN member states.

It adds that 219,000 tonnes of waste collected.
