Over 200 stolen motorcycles have been recovered in a recent police operation in Uasin Gishu County over the past month.

Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Benjamin Mwanthi reported that 16 suspects linked to the theft racket have been arrested and charged in court during this period.

Commander Mwanthi made these remarks during a visit from Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii, who praised the security officers for their commendable efforts in maintaining safety and security in the region.

“I am happy with the work being done by our officers to maintain security in Eldoret City and in particular deal with the problem of motorcycle theft that had become rampant in our region," Bii said.

He said Eldoret City was gearing up to expand business operations on a 24-hour basis and there would be a need for enhanced security.

Bii asked residents to ensure they work closely with security agencies in dealing with crime in the region.

The governor said his administration is committed to also work with and support security agencies in discharging their mandate.

He said they would provide support to the county government to ensure the 24hrs economy works well in Eldoret City.

“We are happy that the governor has visited to see the work we are doing and his visit is a morale booster to our officers because it shows the governor values the work done by our officers," Mwanthi said.

The county boss visited a yard where the recovered motorcycles have been displayed so that affected residents can identify and collect them.

“We urge our boda boda riders not to buy spare parts from unauthorized dealers who may sell them stollen items”, said Mwanthi.

He said the motorcycle theft was a wide racket extending to other parts of the North Rift and western Kenya.
