In response to a tragic incident linked to a land dispute, additional security personnel have been deployed to Bura village in Tana River County.

On September 17, three men—Iddi Ali Aliye, 34; Mahamud Balagha Soye, 70; and Faraj Dibho Juma, 20—were shot dead during a raid by approximately 20 armed assailants.

The attackers opened fire and subsequently disposed of the bodies along the Kiembeni Village section of the Bura-Hola highway, prompting police to increase security measures in the area.

10 spent cartridges, four live rounds all of 7.62mm and an AK47 rifle magazine cover were recovered at the scene.

The bodies were moved to Hola County Referral Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem.

Police said they have since enhanced patrols in the area even as they investigate the attack to arrest the perpetrators.

A resident said they had been threatened by their neighbours since they relocated to the area.

The victims were settlers in the area and had been displaced by floods.

"We were told by the County Government to settle in this place during the floods, but our neighbours claim that this is their grazing land and have sworn to finish us," a local man said.

He said that the community has sought help from security agencies in vain, while members of their community continue to get killed by their neighbours.

The man warned that complacency in addressing the matter will plunge the region into chaos that would be difficult to control.

There are fears there will be more attacks or retaliations.

More than five people have died as a result of the violence in less than a week.

Tana River County Commissioner David Koskei said all efforts are being made to bring the perpetrators to book. He warned Kangaroo Courts will not be allowed to settle cases of murder.

"When you kill someone, you must face the law, the respective communities must bring to us the perpetrators of violence or they surrender," he said.

He added more security personnel had been sent to the area to get the gang behind the attacks amid tensions.
