Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua now says that former President Uhuru Kenyatta is the undisputed king of the Mt Kenya region.

Speaking on Friday, Gachagua said the people of Mt Kenya feel bad that they went against his advice in 2022 when he backed opposition leader Raila Odinga.

“Uhuru Kenyatta is the undisputed king of the mountain,” he said on Citizen TV.

“I can tell you myself and the mountain people feel very bad that we punished Uhuru Kenyatta, demeaned him, told him off, embarrassed him for telling us Raila Odinga is a good man. We were very brutal with him. It has come to our knowledge that it was very unfair because his crime was to tell us Raila is a good man and we decided Raila is a bad man, William Ruto is a good man and now that Ruto has said Raila is a good man I had to apologise to Uhuru.”

The Deputy President referenced Uhuru as king of the region, saying that in their tradition, a king only pronounces himself once, which he did by endorsing Raila.

Gachagua said the same has been said by President William Ruto, and as is the case today, the people of central have no issue with Raila Odinga.

“Our people are saying a Mt Kenya king does not pronounce himself twice on a matter. Our son President Uhuru Kenyatta had pronounced himself on this matter and that pronouncement carries the day. As we stand today, me and the mountain people are quite happy with Raila and we do not have a problem with him,” he said.

Speaking on his relationship with the retired president, Gachagua said that he reached out to Uhuru and apologised on behalf of the community.

“It’s Good. Brotherly. We are a very interesting community. We rarely fight and when we do and realise we fought without a good reason we patch up. I was the one who reached out and apologised.”
