Detectives from the homicide unit at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters have taken over a probe into the macabre murder of a businessman in Parklands, Nairobi.

This is after the killers left a clue on their possible motive in the shooting of businessman Sagar Panara, 36 on September midnight.

Panara was shot once in the neck by assailants who were on a motorcycle.

The team said they are pursuing the motive of land in Narok which the family of Panara owns.

This is after the killers left leaflets at the scene of the murder indicating the land issue was the cause of the shooting.

The family of Panara also said they had received death threats over the land.

Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei termed the murder cold blood revealing more experts had joined in the probe.

“They left leaflets to show they killed him over a land issue in Narok. The family too has indicated there were threats over the same issue. We will ensure justice in the matter,” he said.

The deceased's brother Ravi Panara confirmed that they have been receiving threats over their Narok land.

“These threats have been there and it seems they were serious,” he told police.

It is not clear if the family reported the matter to the police and if there was any action taken.

A team of detectives visited the scene of the shooting and the home of the deceased on Wednesday as part of the probe into the murder.

Panara was also an employee at Mart Networks. Police said he was shot dead by unknown assailants in what appears to be a targeted attack on Tuesday, September 24 evening.

According to police, Panara was shot as he returned home from the Aga Khan Sports Club, raising the possibility that he was being trailed.

He was driving a white Toyota Corolla when the attackers ambushed him at the entrance to his residential compound.

After a brief altercation, the assailants shot Panara in the neck, just below her right ear, and fled the scene.

Neighbours and police officers responded to the gunshots, rushing Panara to Aga Khan Hospital, where he passed away while receiving emergency treatment.

Panara’s wife, Nejal Panara, confirmed that he had arrived moments after returning from the sports club.

Police said they found six ominous leaflets left behind by the attackers at the scene.

"The notes bore the message "vacate Narok land one Panara down and Narok,” indicating a possible link to a land dispute in the Narok region.

The police team is expected to visit the land in dispute as part of the probe.
