Driver rescued by police after ambush by armed robbers in Emali

Police are investigating an incident that unfolded on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway when Muthoka Nzangi, the driver of an Isuzu truck was allegedly ambushed by armed assailants. 

According to Nzangi, at around 11:00 pm on Wednesday while transporting assorted parcels to Nairobi, he was blocked by a white Toyota Probox with three occupants armed with knives near Mbui Nzau.

Nzangi said he was forcibly tied with ropes and bundled behind the driver's seat as the assailants took control of the vehicle, heading towards Nairobi.

Along the route, the robbers made several stops to offload items from the truck.

On reaching Emali town, police officers who were on mobile patrol saw the number of six occupants in the said vehicle drawing their attention and stopped it.

"The vehicle did not stop and sped off and branched off the highway and joined the old Mombasa road," police said.

The officers followed it and the occupants in the lorry jumped off the moving vehicle and disappeared into the darkness.

Police said the driver was rescued in stable condition and the lorry was taken to Emali police station for further investigations.

"A follow-up report of the items stolen and their value is to follow. The driver was detained for interrogation. Case pending under investigation."
