The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission is in pursuit of Sh615 million wealth believed to have been acquired irregularly by a Kakamega county official.
EACC arrested the official and escorted him to the commission’s Bungoma Regional offices where he recorded a statement.
The official is among various public officials whose homes were raided by the EACC last week.
EACC described the operation as an “intensified crackdown on unexplained wealth acquired through theft of public funds”.
Through its Spokesperson Eric Ngumbi, the Commission confirmed the assets forfeiture probe targeting the Kakamega official.
Ngumbi said that the official's arrest and search operation were part of an ongoing investigation into suspected proceeds of corruption.
“The Commission took up the matter upon receipt of complaints that the official had accumulated unexplained wealth worth millions of shillings through kickbacks that the Commission reasonably believes he received from suppliers and contractors,” Ngumbi said.
Among the assets EACC believes were acquired from the proceeds are a top private school valued at Sh200 million, hotels, landed properties, commercial buildings and six high-end vehicles
The EACC is also pursuing numerous prime parcels of land in different parts of the country that are yet to be valued.
