In Summary

  • Addressing the House on Tuesday, Junet noted that the impeachment motion is unlike any other impeachment motion as it touches on the person of Gachagua.
  • "Mr Speaker, I wanted to get your assurance as the leader of this house that the 291 MPs who have signed this motion that their safety and security will be guaranteed," he said.

National Assembly  Minority Leader Junet Mohammed has urged Speaker Moses Wetangula to ensure that the MPs who expressed their support for the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, are protected during this period.

Addressing the House on Tuesday, Junet noted that the impeachment motion is unlike any other impeachment motion as it touches on the person of Gachagua.

"Mr Speaker, I wanted to get your assurance as the leader of this house that the 291 MPs who have signed this motion that their safety and security will be guaranteed," he said.

He stated that the motion does not end with the tabling of the motion, which has happened today but goes on to other processes, including a debate and voting.

Junet said the 291 lawmakers should be present for the debate.

Roping in the Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, the MP said the former must take responsibility to guarantee the safety and security of the 291 MPs.

Emphasising on the weight of the motion, he asked that the supporting MPs should not be begrudged as they are within the limits of the law.

Supporting the point, Majority Leader Kimani Ichungw'ah said the security of the MPs is paramount.

"Honorable Speaker, you must direct the IG of police to ensure that when this House is sitting within the precincts of Parliament, and even outside and including committees of this house sitting, members are secured even in their homes," he said.

Daadb MP Farah Maalim also called for the safety of President William Ruto.

“Not only do we have to protect the lives of 291 MPs who have appended their signature there, we must also protect the system, the Inspector General must protect the President. We know the kind of constitution we have, any reckless thug can decide to change the cause of history, God forbid if anything were to happen to our President,” he said.
