Speaker Wetang'ula approves notice of motion to impeach Gachagua

Speaker confirms that having examined it, the motion meets the requirements

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has confirmed the receipt of a motion seeking to remove Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The motion is dated September 26 and received on September 27.

In determining the admissibility of the motion, Wetangula confirmed that having examined it, the motion meets the requirements relating to form and threshold set out in Article 145 (1) and 150 (1)b of the constitution and standing orders 64 (1).

“I have also satisfied myself that the number of members who have appended their signatures in support of the special motion exceeds the minimum threshold of 117 members in this House,” he said.

Kibwezi West MP Mutuse Mwengi is the mover of the motion.

As per the rules, the Mutuse is set to give notice of the motion within three sitting days following the approval by the speaker.

“In the circumstances, therefore, the member for Kibwezi ought to give his notice of the special motion either today or tomorrow,” the Speaker said.

While moving the motion, Mutuse said this was a “historic moment.”
