Detectives have
arrested one suspected and seized bhang worth Sh7 million in Voi.
The DCI said in a
statement Thursday evening, that the arrest was coordinated by detectives, traffic
and general duty officers from Voi police station.
The suspect, 50, was
flagged down as he drove in a grey Voxy with the illicit consignment on board.
The statement said the
suspect attempted to slip through the police dragnet by fleeing but officers
gave chase and caught up with him off-road.
“When traffic officers
near Izera Ranch signalled him to stop, he accelerated and drove towards Mombasa.
This reckless driving triggered an immediate response from the DCI and general
duty officers who gave chase,” the DCI said.
The vehicle was
escorted back to Voi police station under the watchful eyes of the officers.
“In the vehicle, 1,315
rolls and eight and a half sacks of bhang, with an estimated street value of
Sh7,135,500 were recovered,” the DCI said.
The suspect has been detained
at the Voi police station awaiting his date in the court of justice.
The seizure is the
latest in a series of drug hauls involving bhang pointing to an increasing attempt
by traffickers to move the banned substance across the country.
The suspected
traffickers have, however, found the going tough as they have on most occasions
been arrested while in transit.
Seizures involving cannabis
sativa in recent days have run into several hundreds of millions.
